Founder

Dr. Sharma is the Hillis Distinguished Chair of Medicine, director of Center for Precision Medicine, Vice Chair of Research and Chief of the Nephrology Division at the University of Texas Health San Antonio.  He was previously the Director of the Institute for Metabolomic Medicine at University of California San Diego and had his fellowship and research training at the University of Pennsylvania. He has continuous NIH research funding for the past 30 years for his research which explores the mechanisms and treatment of acute and chronic kidney disease. His work has led to breakthroughs in understanding mitochondrial function in kidney disease and he is a global leader in metabolomic studies for novel biomarkers in kidney disease. Dr. Sharma has directed several multi-million dollar projects funded by National Institutes of Health and JDRF to identify novel paradigms and biomarkers for complications of diabetes and develop novel clinical trials in kidney disease. He served on numerous NIH study sections and was a standing member of the NIH Pathobiology of Kidney Disease study section. He plays a leading role in the NIH Kidney Precision Medicine program and directs the national hub for analysis of spatial metabolomic profiles of kidney tissues.
